Department; assists with and responds to: Code 99’s, Code White,
Code Red, Code Black, Code 13; performs all hospital security
functions; initiates IV’s in hospital as part of IV team; completes
quality improvement audits; bases pre-hospital care on quality
improvement process changes and evidence-based findings in
literature; cooperates as a member of the department and overall,
hospital care delivery team; utilizes safety practices in daily
activities, ie. Abides by safe driving policies and patient care
practices.

The City of Mason City, Iowa, is taking
applications for the Civil Service Commission's entrance
examinations for the full-time position of Fire Fighter/EMT, which
consists of written and physical ability examinations. Applicants
must hold an EMT-B or higher certification (National or Iowa) in
order to test. Testing will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at
8:00 a.m., at the Mason City Fire Department, 350 5th St SW, Mason
City, IA.
Applications. Only applicants who have completed the City's
application and complied with all pre-testing requirements and
deadlines can take the written and physical ability tests on October
4, 2008. Applications must be received and in hand by Human
Resources at City Hall (10 1st St NW) by 4:30 p.m. on Friday,
September 19, 2008. Applicants who mail their applications with a
postmark before this date, but whose application is actually
received after this date, will not be eligible to attend the
testing. After an application is received, packets will be mailed to
applicants with more information on the written and physical

Civil Service List. Applicants who successfully pass the written and
physical ability tests may be placed on the Department's Civil
Service List. For the next two years, all fire fighters will be
hired from this list (unless the list is exhausted sooner).
Minimum Standards for Hiring. Applicants must be a high school
graduate or hold a GED certificate and be at least 18 years of age
at time of employment, Prior to hiring, individuals must comply with
all State of Iowa standards for fire fighters, including no record
felony convictions or crimes of moral turpitude. Individuals must
have a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
Pre-employment physical and drug testing will be done as a condition
of employment.
Special Requirements for Fire Fighters. Fire fighters at the Mason
City Fire Department must: obtain a Chauffeurs license within 30
days of their employment; live within 10 miles of the City's limits
within 6 months; be Fire Fighter I certified no more than 1 year
after their employment starts; and have Paramedic certification
within 3 years.
Salary and Benefits. Starting salary is $15.28 to $15.84 per hour
depending upon EMT certification level. The City of Mason City
provides excellent benefits to its fire fighters, including: paid

insurance, retirement benefits through the State's 411 Municipal
Fire & Police Retirement System, uniform allowance, dental insurance
